Hand-Made Pottery - Wax Dipping

Glazing needs to be applied to some areas of an item and kept away from others. Typically the feet or base of an item need to be unglazed, otherwise it would stick in the kiln during the second firing. Keeping these areas clear also adds character to the model.

Molten wax is used to do this. Each item is lowered into the wax and then left to dry. During the second firing, the wax burns off to leave areas unglazed but vitrified and non-absorbent.
